DJI C1 certifies freedom

Posted on Dec 8, 2022

The world’s first C1 drone certificate gives Mavic 3 users more freedom for flying

Drones used to be only something reserved for military covert operations, but in recent times they have grown in popularity in the civilian sphere. DJI has sat at the head of the table and is now the global leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology. Made for Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine drones, the application process allows user to obtain the new C1 class identification label.

There are several advantages to the certificate. Users will no longer have to pass the complex and costly A2 ‘Remote Piloting License’ exam and can fly in the A1 Open Category. Increased freedom in previously restricted environments means better options for overhead shots. Essentially, it avoids obtaining special permission and an especially lengthy admin process.

The C1 certificate – the world’s first under the new Europeans Drone Regulation – was issued earlier this year by the officially-recognised notified body of TÜV Rhineland. It is valid across the European Economic Area (with additions to Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) and applies to all hardware and C1-updated-firmware of the DJI Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine.

C1-certified drones with C1-compliant firmware are also subject to additional mandatory changes under European Drone Regulation. They must meet the noise reduction level of 83db, they must stay 50m away when filming people or objects, the auxiliary LEDs will be turned on or off automatically during use, and LEDs at the front arms will blink by default for the duration of the UAV being powered on.

From 9 December, users can voluntarily request the C1 certificate at no charge. It is required to provide drone serial number and confirmation of updated firmware. Users must be aware that if they obtain the label after updating their firmware, all future updates will include the technical changes required by the C1 certificate and cannot be reversed. More details about the application process can be found here.
