100 years of wonder with Leica and Disney

Posted on Apr 6, 2023

The collaboration that lasted a century. Leica and Disney celebrate 100 years of partnership with the release of the limited-edition Leica Q2 | Disney “100 Year of Wonder”

The Leica and Disney affair is a fascinating story of shared passion for captivating imagery. Leica has been developing optical instruments for over 100 years, uniting creatives including the likes of Walt Disney himself.

An iconic pairing of imagination, Disney has used Leica cameras and projectors since the very early days of animation in their studios. To mark the anniversary of the alliance, Leica and Disney are unveiling the exclusive, limited-edition Leica Q2 | Disney “100 Years of Wonder”.

The ‘Lecia Reel’ led Disney to a drastic change, which came to define animated stills that are run on 35mm film projections. Through this advanced process, the preliminary artwork is then aligned with a soundtrack using combined techniques for a precise sense of pace of a sequence.

The special design of the Leica Q2 dates back to a model sheet created in 1937 by one of Walt Disney Studio’s noted animators, Don Towsley. A Mickey Mouse print adorns the camera’s top plate, and it includes a protective dust bag with matching original Disney graphics. The body art is reminiscent of the tracing paper on which Disney creators sketched scenes and characters and gives the Leica Q2 a sophisticated feel – great for amateur collectors!

Limited to just 500 sets worldwide, the Leica Q2 is available globally at Leica Stores and Leica Online and authorised dealers from April 2023. The camera will be priced at £5,400.
