Posted on Apr 8, 2024
The World Press Photo Foundation has unveiled the regional winners in its World Press Photo Contest 2024, setting the stage for the global awards, which will be announced on April 18, 2024 at 11:00am CEST.
This prestigious competition, which celebrates the best in photojournalism and documentary photography, highlights compelling stories from across the globe. The winners, chosen from a pool of 61,062 entries by 3,851 photographers from 130 countries, were first selected by six regional juries before undergoing final evaluation by a global jury.
“This year’s selection includes stories of desperation, hunger, war, and loss – but also of perseverance, courage, love, family, dreams, and more butterflies than anyone has a right to expect.” stated Joumana El Zein Khoury, Executive Director of World Press Photo.
Highlighted stories include a poignant capture of a Palestinian woman’s grief as she clutches the body of her niece, offering a powerful insight into the personal loss associated with war. Other featured narratives include the fight against climate change, illustrating the urgency of activism and the documentation of what we stand to lose.
Fiona Shields, Global Jury Chair and Head of Photography at The Guardian, emphasised the power of the selected works to raise awareness: “These final selected works are a tapestry of our world today, centred on images we believe were made with respect and integrity, that can speak universally and resonate far beyond their origins.”
The winners will be showcased at the Flagship World Press Photo Exhibition at De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The exhibition opens on April 18 at 11:00am with the official announcement of the global winners. It will then tour over 60 locations worldwide, stopping at London’s Borough Yards from May 3-27, 2024.
