Leica Lux iPhone app released

Posted on Jun 7, 2024

Leica has launched the Leica Lux app, a photography app for iPhone

The app aims to offer users access to the ‘Leica look’ without the Leica price tag, with a variety of simulations and advanced exposure controls. Here’s a rundown of the features.

Lens simulations

The Leica Lux app includes a feature known as the ‘Leica Lens Look’, which allows users to simulate the characteristics of various Leica lenses, including the Summilux-M 28 mm f/1.4 ASPH and the Noctilux-M 50 mm f/1.2 ASPH.

The app uses Leica’s image processing engine, which is based on machine learning and computational photography, to reproduce specific lens qualities, such as distinctive bokeh effects.

Colour presets

The app offers a range of colour gradations and film presets that replicate those of Leica cameras.

The Leica Standard Look is designed to provide more natural colour and contrast than the default iPhone camera app, aiming to enhance the depth and texture of photographs.

Users can also select from options like Leica Classic, Leica Contemporary, and Leica Black-and-White.

Controls and customisation

In addition to an easy-to-use automatic mode, the Lux app also offers extensive manual controls. This means users can manually adjust settings such as exposure compensation and shutter speed.

There is also an Aperture Mode that’s available on the free version and replicates aperture priority mode on a digital camera. It ranges between f/1.4 and f/8, giving users control over depth-of-field.

Leica says the app will also receive regular updates, adding new lens profiles and looks to keep the functionality current.

Pricing and availability

The Leica Lux app is currently available for iPhone only under a Freemium model.

The free version provides access to the Automatic Photo mode, Aperture Mode, an emulation of the Leica Summilux-M 28 mm f/1.4 ASPH, and with five Leica Looks.

For £6.99 per month, the Leica Lux Pro version offers additional manual controls and a broader selection of Leica Looks and lens emulations. Subscribers will also receive exclusive Leica content and event access, with ongoing updates to enhance the app’s features.

The app is available now and can be downloaded at Apple’s App Store.
