Bristol-based Real Photography Company to host ‘birth of photography’ event

The free event will feature hands-on experiments and demonstrations of early photographic processes

In 1803, Humphry Davy and Thomas Wedgwood met in Dowry Square in Hotwells and created the world’s first photographic process, 35 years before France claimed the invention. To celebrate this historic event, the Real Photography Company are hosting an event featuring experiments and demonstrations of early photographic processes.

The event will take place at the St Pauls Darkrooms in Bristol from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 September 2019, from 12 to 4pm daily. With free entry, guests can expect to see demonstrations relating to the discovery of William West’s camera obscura, the light sensitivity of silver by Humphrey Davy, and the invention of the negative by William Henry Fox Talbot. Also on display will be the recently taken giant negative by pinhole photographer Justin Quinnell using a ‘wheelie bin pinhole camera’.
