Zhonghua Yang, a photographer from China, was named the Overall Winner of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2024 for his evocative image Red Bean Paste Balls (shown above).
Yang’s photograph, which also clinched the Champagne Taittinger Food for Celebration category, captures a moment in Xiangshan, Zhejiang during preparations for the Lunar New Year feast.
The image resonates with tradition, showcasing the making of red bean dumplings, steamed rice cakes, and glutinous rice cakes, each a testament to time-honoured craftsmanship.
Caroline Kenyon, the Founder of Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year, praised the photograph, saying, “This wonderful, perfectly balanced image is full of light, shadow, mystery, and poignancy. It clearly depicts a celebratory feast being prepared with food that is exquisitely made, its circular shapes contrasting with the angular fretwork screens.”
The competition received thousands of entries from over 65 countries, judged by a panel of experts chaired by food photographer David Loftus.
The winners of the 36 categories were revealed by chef and broadcaster Andi Oliver during an awards ceremony at the Mall Galleries in London on June 4, 2024.
One of the many notable winners was Ming Tang-Evans, who took home the Tiptree Cake Award for his vivid and dynamic image It’s Raining Cake – Hallelujah!, styled by Tarunima Sinha (below).
The finalist images and films will be showcased in a free exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London from June 5-9, 2024 as part of the inaugural Plate! St James’s festival, celebrating food, drink and photography.
Entries for the 2025 competition will open in September. For more information and to view a gallery of all the winning images, visit the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year website.
