Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards 2024 announces longlist

Posted on May 10, 2024

The Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards for photography and moving image publishing has unveiled its longlist for its 39th edition

This year’s selection emphasises personal and political themes, featuring 20 titles that explore a range of topics from the Holocaust to contemporary space exploration.

Highlights from the photography and moving image categories

Among the photography nominations are Isabel Moreno Cortez’s Ángel Miguel and Alice Proujansky’s Hard Times are Fighting Times, which represent a blend of intimate personal narratives and broader societal issues.

The moving image category includes Cinematic Guerrillas by Jie Li and Black Boys: The Social Aesthetics of British Urban Film by Clive Chijioke Nwonka, both reflecting on cultural and historical contexts through cinema.

A montage of black and white film stills showing scenes from a social gathering with people drinking, a woman looking pensively, and a man in a party setting, all in a festive atmosphere.
Memorable Scene with a female spy from the film Adventures in the Bandit’s Den (1958). From Cinematic Guerrillas – Propaganda, Projectionists, and Audiences in Socialist China by Jie Li (Columbia University Press)

Events and recognition

Following this announcement, the awards will shortlist six publications – three in each category – later in May, with winners to be revealed in June 2024.

Each category winner will share a £10,000 prize fund. The awards will be celebrated at various events in Autumn 2024, with past winners events taking place at notable institutions like the Barbican and the V&A.
