Lumix launches telephoto zoom

Posted on Feb 19, 2021

Expanding on the existing optical offerings for S Series bodies, Panasonic has launched a new Lumix telephoto zoom. The Lumix S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Macro O.I.S. looks to be a highly versatile offering on a number of fronts.

Naturally, the range of coverage appeals to a wide variety of photographic pursuits, from sports to nature. Image stabilisation also aids shooting of all kinds and, when combined with S Series cameras’ in-built stabilisation, offers 5.5-stop benefit.

At 300mm, the lens offers results just shy of ‘true’ 1:1 macro, but a 0.5x magnification for half life-size capture is still an attractive feature in an optic like this. High-speed and precise autofocus capabilities are also promising for stills and video shooters alike.

When it comes to construction, Panasonic assures impressive sharpness and a reduction in unwanted artefacts with 17 lens elements in 11 groups, including one UED (ultra extra-low dispersion) lens, two ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses and one UHR (ultra-high refractive index).

Rounding out a strong design, the 70-300mm is dust- and splash-resistant, capable of functioning down to -10°C and compact in size for portability.

The Lumix S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Macro O.I.S. is available from the beginning of May, carrying an RRP of £1259.99.
