New Nikon: NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4

Posted on Nov 2, 2022

The professional super-telephoto lens delivers swift autofocus and a balanced build

Nikon has released the NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S, a super-telephoto prime lens for its Z-mount mirrorless cameras. Meant for professional sports and wildlife photographers, the lens contains a built-in teleconverter and Nikon’s Silky Swift autofocusing system, ensuring adaptability when dealing with moving, unpredictable subjects.

The NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 features a built-in 1.4x teleconverter and supports an optional 2.0x converter. The 1.4x TC transforms the focal length to 840mm without physically extending the lens, and when engaged, the aperture ranges from f/5.6 to 45. The lens measures 165x437mm and weighs 3260g – compact enough for a flight cabin.

The NIKKOR Z ensures stability with in-lens vibration reduction. By itself, the lens boasts 5.0-stop advantage VR; when mounted on a mirrorless camera and used with Synchro VR, it increases to 5.5-stops. It produces sharp images and pronounced bokeh across the frame, offering 26 elements in 20 groups. Additionally, it’s incredibly customisable, allowing users to assign functions to the Fn, focus, and silent control rings. You can also create shortcuts by saving focus distances to the memory-set buttons.

Whether in perfect weather or more inclement conditions, you can be confident your NIKKOR Z lens will hold up. Its fluorine coating repels dust and moisture, and a meso amorphous coat combats incidental light from vertical and diagonal directions. It also supports an optional polarising filter and comes bundled with lens caps and a case. Lastly, it’s easy to hold, with its centre of gravity falling in the middle of the tripod foot.

Save your pennies! The new NIKKOR Z costs £15,499 and becomes available on 24 November 2022. Visit Nikon’s website for more information.
