New Tamron 70-180mm telephoto zoom

Posted on Apr 7, 2020

The new Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is designed for Sony E-mount full-frame cameras.

Third in Tamron’s family of f/2.8 zoom lenses designed for Sony E-mount, the new 70-180mm follows the popular 17-28mm wide-angle and 28-75mm standard. Featuring a fairly compact and lightweight design, measuring 149mm and weighing 810g, the new lens is likely to be a comfortable match with smaller mirrorless bodies.

Autofocus comes by way of a newly developed VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor, that’s quicker and quieter than ever before, Tamron assures. The lens is also compatible with camera-specific features such as Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF for a greater range of options.

Inside, the lens’ construction consists of 19 elements in 14 groups, with a number of special elements. Outside, it features moisture resistance and a fluorine-coated front element.

Other key features include a 0.85m minimum object distance and the same 67mm filter thread size as other lenses in the series.

The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 launches on 14 May with an RRP of £1349.99.
