Nikon Z6 III specs revealed

Following a widely publicised teaser campaign in recent weeks, the official announcement of the Nikon Z6 II will come as no surprise to most. But what it does bring is confirmation of the camera’s specs, which carry some impressive numbers.
Below we take a closer look at the headlines and confirm detailed specifications of what Nikon is marketing as “a new leader in the mid-range full-frame class.”
Nikon Z6 III sensor & processor
At the heart of the Nikon Z6 III is a curiously named 24.5 megapixel ‘partially stacked’ full-frame CMOS sensor. While we don’t have too many technical details about what ‘partially stacked’ means, Nikon says it promises ultra-fast data readouts that “counter rolling shutter distortion” and can deliver up to 120fps in stills and 240fps in video.
This speed is complemented by the Expeed 7, the same processor that can be found in the Z8 and Z9. Nikon adds that the Expeed 7 also brings high levels of image quality, colour fidelity and dynamic range.

Z6 III autofocus
By using the same processor as its older siblings, the Z6 III also enjoys the same autofocus (AF) speeds and inherits the AI-powered subject detection modes that can recognise a variety of different subjects.
Additionally, Nikon claims the Z6 III’s AF is effective down to an impressive -10 EV, which beats that of the Z8 (-9 EV in starlight mode).
Z6 III viewfinder
Possibly the most impressive feature of the Z6 III is the extremely bright electronic viewfinder (EVF), which can achieve up to 4000 nits of brightness. This, combined with 5.76m dots of resolution and 60 fps refresh rate, makes for impressive numbers.
The camera also features a fully articulating 2.1m-dot vari-angle style LCD.
Z6 III video
The Z6 III is being marketed as a hybrid camera and as such also features an impressive video spec. The camera can record 6K Raw and oversampled 4K in camera and can reach up to 240fps slow motion footage.
It offers 12-bit Raw and 10-bit Log recording and supports N-Raw, ProRes Raw HQ, ProRes 422 HQ, H.265 and H.264 codecs.
There is also a high-resolution zoom function which gives users the ability to zoom digitally without losing quality, offering extra flexibility when using prime lenses.
Z6 III image stabilisation
The camera includes a built-in image-stabilisation system. Nikon’s vibration reduction (VR) technology uses a five-axis image sensor shift mechanism to counteract camera shake, which Nikon says offers up to 8 stops of correction in the Z6 III.
Z6 III body
The Z6 III enjoys weather protection with seals against dust and moisture and can operate down to -10°C. It weighs in at 750g and measures approximately 138.5 x 101.5 x 74 mm (wxhxd).
Z6 III price and availability
The Z6 III is expected to ship from July 2024 at a retail price of £2,699 for body only. Kit options include the 24-70mm (£3,249), the 24-120mm (£3,539) and the 24-200mm (3,439).
