Sony makes powerful addition to its compact RX series with the RX100 VII

The new camera features a stacked 20.1MP sensor, advanced autofocus, a ZEISS 24-200mm lens, 4K video and more

With a compact size (102mmx58mmx43mm) and light weight (approximately 302g), Sony’s new RX100 VII sets a new standard in its compact line.

The camera features a newly developed 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor and the latest generation BIONZ X image processor. As well as a high-quality image, versatility is offered in the form of the camera’s Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5 large aperture high-magnification zoom lens.

The RX100 VII’s autofocus performance has previously only been seen in Sony’s A9. The camera’s autofocus system offers 357 focal-plane phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points. Significant improvements over previous Sony RX models have also been made when it comes to tracking; the RX100 VII performs AF/AE calculations up to 60 times per second, captures moving subjects at 20fpsi with AF/AE tracking and offers ‘Real-time Tracking’ and ‘Real-time Eye AF’ capabilities.

In addition to its still image capabilities, the RX100 VII’s video capabilities have seen improvements, too. The camera offers 4K in-body movie recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning in high bit rate XAVCS, as well as many of the same AF tracking capabilities as with still shooting, 4K Active SteadyShot and slow-motion shooting up to 1000fps.

The RX100 VII is available from August 2019 and is priced at approximately £1200.
