The World Press Photo Foundation has announced the winners of its annual competition, with Yasuyoshi Chiba scooping Photo of the Year with Straight Voice, a photograph showing a young man, reciting protest poetry while demonstrators chant slogans in Sudan. Further awards went to Romain Laurendeau who won Story of the Year for Kho, the Genesis of Revolt, a long-term visual account of youth struggle in Algeria.

World Press Photo 2020 was divided into eight categories – Contemporary issues, Environment, General news, Long-term projects, Nature, Portraits, Sports and Spot news.

This year’s winning images will soon be available to buy as a collection in book form. The World Press Photo Yearbook 2020, published by Lannoo Publishers, showcases the winning photography, selected from 73,996 photographs entered by 4,282 photographers from 125 countries. All winning images can also be viewed online now.
