Canon announces 850D, R5 and more!

The Canon EOS 850D, a 24-105mm lens and a compact printer will all be arriving soon – and development of the EOS R5 has been confirmed.

There’s been a veritable shedload of news from Canon of late, and at the top of the heap is the launch of the 850D.

Aimed at enthusiasts, the Canon 850D is designed to be a real all-rounder. Powered by Canon’s Digic 8 processor, the new DSLR contains a 24.1MP Dual Pixel CMOS APS-C sensor alongside a range of spec improvements.

The camera features a 45-point all cross-type AF sensor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, as well as continuous shooting up to 7fps. In Live View mode, focal point selection includes 143 points in automatic mode or 3975 points in manual selection, and eye detect AF is also present.

When it comes to video, the 850D can shoot up to 60p in Full HD and up to 25p in 4K, and features 5-Axis Movie Digital image stabilisation for smoother video.

The Canon EOS 850D is available to pre-order from Canon’s online store and will go on sale from April 2020, with an RSP of £819.99.

Canon RF 24-105mm

The second of Canon’s launches is the RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM. The new lens is compact and lightweight, weighing in at 395g and measuring 88.8×76.6mm. Other highlights include quiet autofocus and 5-stop image stabilisation.

With a versatile focal length and its compact size, the 24-105mm may be a future favourite of travel photographers, street photographers and more.

The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is available from April, with an RSP of £459.99.

Canon Selphy Square QX10

Rounding out the new products is the new Canon Selphy Square QX10, a compact photo printer. At 68x68mm, the printer can fit comfortably in most handbags or backpacks. The QX10 also features Wi-Fi connectivity, USB charging and a free, dedicated app.

Printing on new Canon XS-20L square format photo paper, the printer has no need for ink cartridges or a printer tray, using dye sublimation technology. A photo can be printed in 43 seconds.

The Canon Selphy Square QX10 and packs of 20 Canon XS-20L square format photo paper will be available from Canon’s online store and official Canon retailers from March 2020, priced at £139.99 and £14.99 respectively.

Among its products, Canon has also announced a free image transfer and storage service – image.canon. The free service places users’ images and videos in a central hub for onward delivery to other devices and web services. Images and videos are sent automatically or manually in their original quality from certain Wi-Fi enabled Canon cameras. image.canon will launch in April 2020.

EOS R5 and RF lenses

Finally, Canon has announced the development of the EOS R5, the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens, and the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x teleconverters.

Few R5 features have been released, but continuous shooting up to 20fps and impressive 8K video recording are confirmed. The RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens is among a total of nine RF lenses in development, scheduled for release in 2020.
