Now in its 43rd edition, Canon’s New Cosmos of Photography competition has been supporting new and developing photographers and videographers for almost 30 years. In this time, it’s seen over 30,000 entries, with many of the artists going on to achieve international success.

The New Cosmos of Photography is open to the public regardless of the age or nationality of the contestant, or the theme, number or format of entered works. Simply, the competition seeks those who push the boundaries of photography’s potential.

Experts from around the world have been invited to judge this year’s competition, including British photographer Paul Graham, Japanese art critic Noi Sawaragi and Japanese photographer Mikiya Takimoto. The Excellence Award Selection Committee is meeting in June to choose seven Excellence Award winners and 14 Honourable Mention Award winners, before a Grand Prize winner is selected in October.

All winners will receive prize money and an opportunity to showcase their work in this year’s exhibition of winning entries. The Grand Prize winner, however, will receive ¥1,000,000 – roughly £7400 – a Canon camera and an individual exhibit at 2021’s exhibition.

The competition is open for entries by post or online until 20 May. Winners will be contacted at the end of July.
