Weather Photographer of the Year 2024 winners revealed

The winners of the 2024 Standard Chartered Weather Photographer of the Year competition, hosted by the Royal Meteorological Society, have been unveiled

Selected from a global pool of images representing 84 countries, the winners of the Weather Photographer of the Year 2024 captivated judges and the public with their unique portrayals of meteorological phenomena.

Top honours

Wang Xin from Shanghai, China, claimed the grand prize with “Sprites Dancing in the Dark Night” (shown below), an extraordinary capture of rare atmospheric sprites over Shanghai. Wang’s dedication earned them the £5,000 top award.

In second place, UK-based Andy Gray showcased the Derwent Valley’s frosty landscape with “Hoarfrost Heaven” (shown above), praised for its delicate colours and layers of mist. Jamie Russell of the Isle of Wight took third with “Evening Shower Over the Needles,” a striking coastal storm shot.

Smartphone and Young Photographers

The Smartphone category was led by Malaysia’s Nur Syaireen Natasya Binti Azaharin for her shot of smoking volcanoes in East Java (shown below), winning £2,500.

The Young Photographer title went to Angelina Widmann from Austria for “Rain Aria,” a dramatic rain-soaked performance at Lake Constance.

New Climate Award

Inaugurating the Climate Award, Brazil’s Gerson Turelly won for “Rowing,” capturing flooding in Porto Alegre.

Turelly’s compelling image also won the Public Favourite vote, highlighting the urgent impact of climate change.
